Samedi 14/ dimanche 15 fevrier Stade de France

Nev was up early and off to Paris for the big rugby match between France and Scotland. John arrived to collect him and then a car of men departed for Paris. 3 hours later they went to Johns sister-in-laws apartment (worth 1 million €) they walked to an Irish bar to meet Johns Dad who was arriving by plane from Scotland for the match. A real mixture of nationalities – Scottish, French, and a Kiwi! Had lunch accompanied with 3 pints of Guinness – then on the metro to the Stade de France. It took about 30 minutes and 1 train change to get there.
A 2 minute walk from the metro to the Stadium and tent city. 80000 people turned up for the match – many Scottish kilts and heaps of people in fancy dress. Had a quick beer in tent city then found their way to their seats – on the way a stand selling beer – Wahoo - €6 a cup only to find after it was alcohol FREE! A Scotsman standing behind in the queue felt sorry for them that it was alcohol free and tipped in some whiskey out of his hip flask!
The stadium is huge, seats were high up but weren’t so far away from the sideline – steep. The seats cost €65 but bought on ebay for €48. Great atmosphere but the rugby was not. Final score France 21 – Scotland 13. The teams were both trying to do their best to lose!
The efficiency of the transport system to move 80000 people all at the same time was impressive. They had to wait 15 minutes tops! Back to the apartment to enjoy some French hospitality – Gin! (Oh!! Where was I??) Went out to a Chinese restaurant for a meal – as everywhere was booked out – Valentine’s Day! The meal was average – 3 courses for €16. Nev thinks the French can’t cook proper Chinese, even though they were Chinese. We have had Chinese 3 or 4 times and it is never as good as at home – not much flavour.
Found a café/bar that had some live music, a string quartet. Nev describes it as playing Gypsy/Jazz style. He was so impressed he bought a CD! On inspection and a second hearing at home – obviously alcohol played a big part in this purchase!
Back to the apartment – all 6 people slept at the apartment and hot up and had a typical French breakfast – café, croissants, pain au chocolat etc…
In the car to return about 11:30 – arriving at 2:30.
The girls and I had a very peaceful weekend while this was all happening – shopping, monopoly etc. Then on Sunday after lunch Christelle picked us up and took us out to her place to wait for our husband’s return. Amazingly as we pulled in the drive they were back. John was very ill and hungover – Nev pretty much OK! The girls played for a while then back home for tea.
