Samedi le 27 decembre-On the road -Carcasonne

We got all packed up, not a spare part of the car. We left for Carcasonne, we thought it would be over 2 hours but didn’t bargain for 3 and a half. Again we got fooled for the part after the autoroute. It just takes so much longer. However, Carcasonne is beautiful it has a population of about 46 000. It too has a rich history, it looks like some fairy-tale medieval city. It has an old walled city that is truly breathtaking. You can walk around the ramparts and look down into gardens of some private residences that are still there and have not been taken into commercial space.
It has been fortified across the centuries – Gauls, Romans, Visigoths (who the hell are they?) Moors and Franks! It was quite cool to walk over the drawbridge and enter the walled city. We just made the cut off for the Chateau Comtal entry. Unfortunately a few businesses were shut and I am not sure if that is because it is Xmas Vacances or if only open in summer. So after a few hours meandering around here and soaking it up, we jumped back on the autoroute and headed to Montpellier.
We found accommodation in the central city at Kyriad hotel, they had an apartment for the 4 of us, and headed off for tea. We ended up going to Hippopotamus – a chain restaurant famous for steaks! You can get a steak that costs about 80€. I think though it will feed 4.
As we had already been in Montpellier (220 000 population) for a day we didn’t plan to do much other than leave in the morning.
